Despite the April showers (and we’ve had more than our fair share lately), the season of Spring also invites a wave of fresh new sights and smells as nature awakens from a winter-long hibernation.

We use our five senses every day without even thinking about it. We learn through our senses as they create our experience of reality so, it makes sense (no pun intended!) to apply it when developing your video marketing strategy.

Sight: What does it look like? Powerful visuals solidify a concept and present something in a simple way. Research tells us that where both video and text are available on the same page, 72% of people would rather use video to learn about a product or service.

Sound: But sight isn’t the only focus, how does your video sound? If there’s one thing we think of more than visuals, it’s speech and having a pleasant voiceover humanises your video. Words are the main channel of our message, but they aren’t the only form of communication. Sound effects and a powerful soundtrack make your style stand out, so think about atmospheric sounds that will spark the emotion you wish to inspire.

Smell: What smells fill the air? Scent inspires an immediate reaction and is the most emotional sense. A certain smell can remind us of memories that make us feel happy or terrible in a matter of seconds. Depending on the type of audience you wish to influence, think about the setting they might respond to. Whilst they may not be able to smell your video, visuals of taking a walk through a meadow can create a sense of aroma and positive feeling throughout your video.

Touch: How does it feel? Whilst you cannot touch a video, any element that shows vibrancy or detail mixed with use of sound can allow viewers to imagine.

Taste: In the same way as smell and touch cannot be replicated, strong images; such as, freshly baked bread will certainly help instill a world where the viewer can be immersed and therefore bring them closer to their senses and make it feel more real.

Appealing to the senses has a way of engrossing your viewers into your story, and provokes a range of emotions.
